Portrait of Luke Bowman 2025
Adaptive Track & Field Wheelchair Basketball

Luke Bowman

Scholarship Recipient — 2025

From the moment Luke was old enough to understand what sports were, he knew he wanted to be part of something powerful. Watching his older sister, cousins, classmates, and athletes on TV, he was captivated by the strength, determination, and camaraderie that sports embodied. That spark lit early, and by age five, his parents enrolled him in a soccer program designed for kids with disabilities. It was his first introduction to organized sports-and he was hooked. For nearly five years, soccer was Luke's outlet and passion. But everything changed the summer before fourth grade, when he was introduced to wheelchair basketball. From his very first experience on the court, Luke knew he had found his sport. He committed himself fully to it, practicing relentlessly and working out with both the prep and varsity teams 2-3 times a week. His dedication paid off. Through years of hard work and perseverance, Luke steadily climbed the ranks.By high school, Luke had become a standout athlete in the sport. He competed at the national level twice, and in his senior year, he captured a national title as a member of the Mary Free Bed Junior Pacers. His on-court presence is marked by grit, focus, and a constantly evolving skill set. He credits much of his growth to his willingness to learn, adapt, and push himself beyond comfort zones-qualities that set him apart both as an athlete and a teammate. Not one to limit his abilities, Luke branched out in his sophomore year by joining adaptive track and field. This expansion not only developed his endurance and versatility but opened up new doors to competition, training camps, and elite-level programs. Through partnerships with organizations like GLASA (Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association) and his high school track team, Luke earned the opportunity to compete at both State and National meets. His athletic excellence was further recognized when he was named Sport N' Spokes Jr. Athlete of the Year, a prestigious national honor in the adaptive sports community.A scholar with a 4.0+ GPA and consistent Honor Roll standing, he balances academics and athletics with remarkable discipline. He is also a multi-talented student, active in band, and deeply involved in community service-volunteering 8-10 hours a week with local food pantries, school clean-ups, and church media teams. Whether it's helping his community, competing on the court, or leading in the classroom, Luke gives no% in everything he does.A former pediatric neurosurgery patient himself, he aims to become a pediatric neurosurgeon, using his personal experience to connect with and comfort young patients facing similar challenges. He plans to major in neuroscience, preparing for a career where he can make a difference both in the operating room and in people's lives.

Portrait of Cate Evans 2025
Sled Hockey Wheelchair Tennis

Cate Evans

Scholarship Recipient — 2025

Cate is redefining what it means to be a student-athlete. A standout in both sled hockey and wheelchair tennis, she competes at the highest levels of adaptive sports while pursuing a dual degree in Finance and Supply Chain Management at the University of Michigan, where she holds an impressive 3.97 GPA.Cate currently plays sled hockey for Belle Tire, representing Detroit on the M, AM, and women's teams. A highlight of her recent season was helping her AM team win the Midwest Sled Hockey League Championship-a particularly special accomplishment as she is the only woman on the team, and one of just three women competing in the entire league. Facing off alongside six Canadian Paralympians, Cate has proven herself as a fiercecompetitor who thrives in high-stakes, high-speed environments. She is also an alternate for theU.S. Women's National Sled Hockey Team, continuing to train and push for a spot on the world stage. But her commitment to sport doesn't end on home ice. In a recent milestone for global inclusion, Cate traveled to Mexico City with a team of elite sled hockey players-including Paralympians Josh Pauls and Tyler McGregor-to introduce the sport in Mexico for the first time. There, she taught youth and adults how to play and served as a translator, using her fluency in Spanish to make the sport more accessible to a new generation of athletes.Off the ice, Cate competes as a member of the University of Michigan's Wheelchair Tennis Team, where she's quickly made a name for herself. After only two years in the sport, she was named ITA Collegiate Wheelchair Tennis Rookie of the Year, and earned both ITAScholar-Athlete and All-Academic Team honors for her performance in the classroom and on the court.Cate's athletic journey is matched by a deep commitment to service and accessibility. A disabled athlete herself, she volunteers with the university's Disability and Accessibility Support Services, and has spent over a decade helping others-from coordinating blood drives and participating in pediatric physical therapy labs, to supporting Spanish-speaking workers in employment programs. Her mission is clear: to create more inclusive and empowering spaces, whether in sport, school, or society. With a summer internship at Bechtel's Manufacturing and Technology division and aspirations of continuing her education through graduate studies, Cate remains focused on growing as both an athlete and a changemaker. She's not just playing to win-she's playing to lead, inspire, and pave the way for the next generation of adaptive athletes.

Because Life was Never Intended to be a Spectator Sport

Our Mission

Athletes Unlimited is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing social, recreational and athletic outlets to people with disabilities. Our guiding philosophy is that life is not intended to be a spectator sport. Everyone, regardless of ability, can benefit from participating in sports. It continues to be Athletes Unlimited’s primary goal to provide these opportunities to as many physically challenged individuals as possible.

We firmly believe that everyone should know that individuals with disabilities, regardless of their physical limitations, possess the same basic needs and desires as those without disabilities. Together we can strive to eliminate societal barriers that limit an individual's potential to achieve.

Athletes Unlimited is a registered non-profit with the State of Michigan. Our goal is that 90% of our proceeds go to the organizations and individuals we support. Presently, due to a decrease in funding, 85% of our proceeds are going to those programs. Our main source of fundraising is through an annual golf outing event that is co-chaired by NBA Hall of Famer, George “Iceman” Gervin and Kris Draper of the Detroit Red Wings.
