Mission Statement

Athletes Unlimited

Founded by Jeff S. Pierce, D.O. in 1996

Mission:

Athletes Unlimited is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing social, recreational and athletic outlets to people with disabilities.  Our guiding philosophy is that life is not intended to be a spectator sport.  Everyone, regardless of ability, can benefit from participating in sports.  It continues to be Athletes Unlimited’s primary goal to provide these opportunities to as many physically challenged individuals as possible.

We firmly believe that everyone should know that individuals with disabilities, regardless of their physical limitations, possess the same basic needs and desires as those without disabilities.  Together we can strive to eliminate societal barriers that limit an individuals potential to achieve.

Athletes Unlimited is a registered non-profit with the State of Michigan. Our goal is that 90% of our proceeds go to the organizations and individuals we support. Presently, due to a decrease in funding, 85% of our proceeds are going to those programs. Our main source of fundraising is through an annual golf outing event that is co-chaired by NBA Hall of Famer, George “Iceman” Gervin and Kris Draper of the Detroit Red Wings.

Our Annual Golf Outing Event

Jeff S. Pierce, D.O. founded Athletes Unlimited in 1996 with the determination to provide an outlet where athletes with disabilities are able to participate in sports socially and competitively. Athletes Unlimited’s guiding philosophy is that life is not intended to be a spectator sport. Everyone, regardless of ability, can benefit from participating in sports. Each year Athletes Unlimited hosts a golf outing to help raise money for our athletes. This year we were proud to host our 17th Annual Golf Outing for Athletes Unlimited. With the support of our sponsors we raised over $60,000!

We believe that an annual golf event is an excellent way to bring people together for a good cause regardless of age, gender or ability. Each year we are fortunate enough to have sponsors donate auction items to help our cause. With competitive and recreational golf opportunities, everyone has an opportunity to have a great time, meet new people and support Athletes Unlimited. With all of our generous supporters, we were able to send many of our athletes to compete nationally.

NEWEST Reverse Raffle Dinner Event

We are excited to be hosting our 1st Annual Reverse Raffle Dinner Event March 7, 2015 at Enchantment Banquet Hall by Cranks in Shelby Township. This event gives us an opportunity to reach those people who want to help, but the golf outing may not be for them. This is a fun and entertaining evening that begins with strolling hor d'ouevres and open bar, leading into a 5-course gourmet family style meal; all while being entertained with live music and the excitement of the reverse raffle with many chances to win money and prizes. All leading up to the grand prize of $10,000 cash.

2.1.2017 Congratulations to John McSween of the Michigan Rolling Pistons, John just signed his letter of intent to attend the University of Illinois and continue his education and further his wheelchair basketball career. John has been part of The Michigan Rolling Pistons wheelchair basketball team for many years, Michigan Rolling Pistons is a co-ed, youth wheelchair basketball team providing opportunities for athletes ages 6-18 with physical disabilities to participate competitively in basketball. The athletes on this team are unable to participate in most local programs or school teams. Adaptive sports programs allow these athletes to experience the same benefits as their able-bodied peers. Our primary purpose is to provide more opportunity for boys and girls with physical disabilities to participate competitively in a sport. Our team motto is “No Limits.” The benefits of youth sports are well known. Through athletics, children gain increased selfconfidence and self-esteem, increased physical fitness and overall wellness. They also learn responsibility, and develop better communication and interpersonal relationships. Our athletes are unable to participate in most local programs or any of their school sports teams. Adaptive sports programs allow for these athletes to experience the same benefits as their able-bodied peers while also getting to meet and learn from others with the same abilities. It can be a difficult road keeping the teams up and running. With general overall health care costs, the additional costs of team sports and special equipment required to play can at times be a financial burden on families. That’s where Athletes Unlimited comes in to help support these teams and keep the programs running and growing throughout Southeast Michigan.
